Approximately 120,000 Hoosiers and 5.3 million Americans nationwide are stricken with Alzheimer’s Disease, making it the 7th leading cause of death in America.
In 2009, the walk raised $1.2 million. This year’s walk strives to boost funding to $1.3 million toward the cause. The Memory Walk is the nation's largest Alzheimer’s awareness event. Since 1989, it has raised more than $300 million for the cause. The Greater Indiana Chapter will host 12 walks in 2010 while walks are held in nearly 600 locations nationwide.
“Having a family member with the disease, I have witnessed its’ devastating effects firsthand,” Deborah Daily said, CEO of Buckaroo. “I walk for the memories of my father-in-law.”
The walk includes: a scenic stroll along the canal; wheelchair/stroller accessibility; entertainment; refreshments; activities for kids and kids-at-heart; remembrance areas; and displays from sponsors and community organizations.
There are no registration fees but, participants are encouraged to raise money. Those who raise $100 or more will receive a free 2010 Memory Walk T-shirt.
Can’t make it to the event? You can still do your part through corporate sponsorship and donations such as “Forget-Me-Not” paper flowers. Take them to work, a place of worship, or even the local drugstore, and ask that individuals fill out a paper flower to make a donation and remember an individual touched by Alzheimer’s Disease.
